1st Threemilestone Scout Group marked a major milestone this weekend as young people, volunteers and families came together to celebrate the group’s 50th anniversary.

Founded in 1976, the group celebrated half a century of Scouting with a full afternoon of activities at their meeting place, Tomperrow Campsite in Carrick District. The celebration brought together members from across the sections, past and present, for a day focused on fun, friendship and community.

Young people enjoyed a wide range of games and activities, with a magic show proving a real highlight for many. Volunteers cooked a barbecue for everyone to enjoy, and an ice cream van added an extra treat to the occasion, helping to make the anniversary feel like a true community celebration.

County Lead Volunteer James McIntyre praised the group’s volunteers and the impact they have had over the years. He said:

“It was wonderful to see the whole group together celebrating 50 years of Scouting in Threemilestone. Days like this show the real impact of our volunteers – creating fun, inclusive experiences that young people remember for life. The sense of community here is something to be very proud of.”

The anniversary event was not only a chance to reflect on the group’s history, but also to celebrate the future of Scouting in Threemilestone, as young people continue to learn new skills, build confidence and enjoy new adventures together.

The streets of Liskeard and surrounding villages were filled with festive magic last week as the 1st Liskeard Santa Tour returned for its fourth year. From Saturday 13 December to Thursday 19 December (with a well-earned rest on Wednesday), Santa and his helpers brought joy to hundreds of families – and raised an incredible £957.30 for local Scouting*.

Starting out four years ago with Santa perched on an old tractor, the tour has grown into a much-loved tradition. This year, thanks to the support of the Liskeard Lions Club, Santa travelled in style on a specially built trailer. Alongside half of the group’s leaders, parents and friends joined in to make the event possible.

The tour focused on Liskeard but also visited nearby villages where members live. A local toy supplier generously donated high-end toys, which were given out for donations. Even Liskeard’s Deputy Mayor joined the fun each night, showing the strength of community spirit.

Funds raised will help the group upgrade tents, stock up on Scout hut supplies, and support an exciting trip to Brownsea Island – the birthplace of Scouting.

Kieron, organiser of the Santa Tour, said:
“It’s really nice to be out there helping the community as well as our members. The best bit for all of us leaders and helpers is seeing the kids’ faces light up when Santa turns that corner and they see him for the first time.“

The group is now aiming to reach £1,000 before Christmas. If you’d like to help, every little bit makes a big difference:
https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QVTH2CKQ

*accurate as of 20/12/2025

Pete Volkner has been awarded The Chief Scout’s Commendation for Meritorious Conduct, recognising his selfless and life-saving actions in an emergency that could have ended very differently.

The award was presented on Thursday at St Stephen Primary School, where 1st St Stephen Cubs meet, by James McIntyre, Lead Volunteer for Cornwall Scouts. Pete holds various roles across Mid Cornwall District and Cornwall Scouts, and is well known for his dedication to Scouting and the community.

The story behind the award is one that reminds us all why first aid matters. A year ago, Pete received a call from his mother-in-law: something was wrong with his father-in-law, Mike, who had collapsed in the garage. Pete rushed over and found Mike unresponsive. In Pete’s own words, “my training kicked in.” He immediately began CPR and continued until emergency services arrived – including paramedics, land ambulances, and the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

An A&E consultant later confirmed that without Pete’s actions, the outcome would have been very different.

“It was a real privilege to present Pete with this award,” said James McIntyre. “His actions were nothing short of heroic, and they remind us all why the skills we learn in Scouts – like first aid – really matter. Pete’s calm, quick thinking made all the difference that day, and we’re incredibly proud of him.”

What made the evening even more special was that Mike was present to see Pete receive the award – a moment full of emotion, pride, and gratitude.

This is what Scouting is all about: being prepared, stepping up, and making a difference when it matters most.
