Understanding First Aid Training

Module 10 needs to be completed for any active leadership roles on Compass and in addition, you need to ensure your mandatory training is kept up to date. Initial First Aid Training for module 10 must be in the form of a 6-hour first aid course.

The three options for completing the criteria for first aid validation are:

1). Complete Scout Modules, 10A Life Support, 10A Illnesses, 10A Major Injuries and 10B CPR Practical

2). Undertake any exterior first aid qualification & then additionally complete and submit the additional Cornwall Scout Upskill Test

3). Share a Medical professional qualification or competency & then additionally complete and submit the Cornwall Scout Upskill Test

Any EFAW, EFAW (Sports), EFAW (Outdoors), FAW or EPFA or PFA qualification is acceptable to demonstrate training towards Module 10 and/or mandatory learning. However, whilst a PFA qualification covers the scout association’s required course material of ‘Meningitis and Hyperthermia/Hypothermia’, an FAW/Outdoors  qualification only covers ‘Hyperthermia/Hypothermia’ and not Meningitis and an EFAW or EPFA course does not include either subject. In the new Module 10 delivery; which started in February 2021, additional delivery elements of ‘Heart Attack, Dental Injuries and Sepsis’ were also introduced, neither of the later are core elements of any of the qualifications listed above, and therefore additional training is required. Any individual employed as a medical professional will need a  letter of assurance in respect of competency from a recognised medical organisation such as a hospital or trust or be able to share their qualification by the online sharing profile system.
